My annual Chicago visit.
Each year I travel by car to Chicago to watch the
running of the Arlington Million. On the way there
and back, I generally spend one or two nights in
Madison, WI., a city I have come to really like, and
enjoy the restaurants there. This year I took some
extra time to drive downtown to the Chicago Art Institute for the
afternoon. I have not been to this gallery for
over 30 years, and thought it was about time to
have another look. It certainly was well worth
the effort, as they have a very good collection
there and usually have some interesting artists
featured at any given time.
This time it was Canadian photographer Jeff Wall. I
wasn't familiar with his work, and found that I liked
it more than I expected to. The first part of the
material failed to grab my attention; that changed as
I continued to view the rest of the collection.
Overall, I found that four hours passed pretty fast,
but was ready to head off for supper even though
there were still things to see there. There comes a
point when you need to take a break from viewing art
and do something else before it becomes a chore. I
find now that a full afternoon does it for me, and my
concentration starts to shift.
After a frustrating Friday at Arlington Park, seeing my horses finish in the money but not winning, it was the big day. The Arlington Million along with the Beverly D. and the Secretariat Stakes makes for a nice day of top level horses at a very nice racetrack. I always enjoy this track, this year marking my tenth trip to watch this race.
The Beverly D is one of the richest turf races for fillys and mares, and this year's was an exciting finish.
And then the feature, the Million:
The third big race of the day is the Secretariat Stakes, often not seen as important as the other two races, but really does feature some very fine three year old turf runners. Here, I finally get it right and pick the winner. Thank goodness I got one right!
