I
wanted a home base for the Scavengers in my games, so I came up with the concept of a shantytown.
These huts have been an ongoing project, and are all made from scraps, various forms of craft sticks, toothpicks, matchsticks, and bamboo skewers. They have also proven handy as a use for scrap wood and pieces pulled off old projects.
A few are intended to be converted storage units, but most are plain cubes with a flat roof built from scrap lumber. Some however, have made an attempt at comfort or style.
The Scavs (AKA Scabs) were originally the lowest of the low, but I found myself changing the concept as I found myself trying to "gentrify" these pathetic little hovels.
There are wooden roofs and canvas/tarp roofs, plus the occasional awning or
porch. Some have false windows painted on, and one even has a fake TV antenna.
All are covered with graffiti, and the always popular "Get Into Taxpaying" posters. Many of these have been defaced, showing a sad lack of love for the legal government.
Those parts that are 'recycled' are prepainted, but most are just stained with various inks and washes after assembly .
For game use, they are all assumed to be badly enough made that they do not block vision from the inside (even through closed walls) but block all vision from the outside save through openings in the walls (doors & windows, duh)

Doug's
Doug's is a small merchant stand selling whatever the scenario calls for: Usually not specified. Used by itself, with the animal pen & shade awning it makes a nice roadside vignette, or it can just add some colour to a collection of shanties. |

![]() | The Wreck The wreck is a burned-out shanty. I assume that there would be a high risk of fire in these hovels, and I wanted to show some results. The piece was built as a wreck, and was stained with black ink, and then black paint. The rubble is enhanced with sawdust painted with white glue before staining. |
The others are all variations on the theme...
