This isn't actually my own creation, exactly... This is the K-Line kit 4011 -
Factory. The kit is sold as 'O' scale, but the building & accessories are
actually 'S' scale. (1/64th = 28mm) They have several other useful kits
including a train station, firehouse, police station,
supermarket, barn & chicken house, church, ranch house, diner, airport, &
others.
(Since I made this page, it appears that they may have gone out of production: Too bad, as they were really nice kits.)
I took the easy way, and painted the walls black, wiping the paint away to stain & bring out the details. The bricks are the natural plastic colour.
The roof lifts off and the rear doors slide open: I also cut out the front & employee doors and hinged them so they too would open & close. I had to enlarge the doors, as they were too small for S guage, waaaay too small for O guage.
The building was of course hollow. I added the raised interior floor, office wall & second storey. The windows have silhouettes moulded on the inside so that loghts would cast 'realistic' shadows on the windows. (Remember, these are intended for railway layouts) I carved these away, even thoughy they hurt nothing.

The base is beaver board and the vegetation green-stained sponge. The litter
is mostly crumpled paper.
I added some detail under the loading dock: A cardboard box, dirt, plants, & litter. The containers on the dock and the forklift are not fixed in place. I regret that I didn't make the side loading doors functional, but I didn't. Maybe later. The kit also had some nice little accessories: A drill press, forklift, scale, & small pallets. Very pretty pieces. |
