All about Fred

I was born in Germany a long time ago and decided to find a brighter future and opportunity in Canada and came here in November of 1956.
Boy, I worked at anything that came along, Roofing, Laborer and Mechanic etc. In 1958 I was offered a good job as Foreman in a large Decorating firm and soon advanced to Manager and within another year to General Manager.
Well, actually that was due to the training and education I received in Germany.
I worked in that capacity until 1971, when Phyllis and I decided to go into full-time farming.
Our home on the farm was large enough to be the home for four people, Phyllis, her Mom, myself and Angie.
We started a pure breed hog enterprise, producing up to 500-550 heads a year, farrow to finish.
We were successful with that enterprise and had many articles written about this in the papers and magazines.
Phyllis and I attended College courses and after about 4 years of study,
we received our Diplomas in Agricultural Business Management and Livestock Husbandry.
So, we bought more land and larger equipment and started a Cattle herd.
With A.I. and good management we eventually had a 90 % pure breed Limousine herd of 25 Cows,
1 Bull and yearly a good set of calves.
On Friday, the 13th of November 1992, I met with an unfortunate farming accident, when I got my left foot caught in a grain auger. The damage was to severe and I had my left foot amputated.
This accident finally led to a decline in our farming enterprise as many more amputations followed due to complications.
First we sold our Cattle, the outdoors work in the winter months was impossible because that was the time we choose for operations.
Finally, 3 years ago we sold our hogs and as of this year, 1998, we have leased out the land and are officially retired.

Hobbies

Virtuoso at Work !

I like working on my computer, love all electronics, travel, gardening, reading, plumbing and looking after all the jobs one has in the yard and home. My winter months I spend doing some wood working, like building Birds nests and feeders and I plan to get involved in making other things.
