Pastor Michael Kurtz
Profile of Pastor Michael
Kurtz, B.A., M.A., M.Div.
Michael was born in Regina and lived there for the
first 23 years of his life. His father was a Lutheran pastor and his mother,
who died in 1993, was a dietitian. He is the youngest of seven children, with
five sisters and a brother. He went to high school at Luther College and
studied World Religions at Luther College at the University of Regina where he
received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1989. He also received a Master of Arts
degree from the same university, specializing in Islamic Studies.
While a student, Michael
worked at a variety of summer jobs: he has been a parkade attendant, a hardware
manufacturer and salesperson, a janitor, a warehouseman, and a pizza chef. He
has also taught Religious Studies at the University of Regina.
He studied theology at the
Vancouver School of Theology and at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He
served his internship at Grace Lutheran Church in Edson, Alberta; he had such a
wonderful time there that he holds them responsible for his definite decision
to seek a career in parish ministry. Most recently he pursued his interest in
Islamic Studies at the University of Toronto by studying for two years at the
post-graduate level.
He is enthusiastic and
delighted to be serving at First Lutheran Church, which is his first call as a
pastor. His wife, Sue Sorensen, teaches English Literature at the University of
Winnipeg, his stepson Peter attends
Wolseley School, and the newest addition to the family in 2002 Theo,
keeps everyone in their household very active. They live in a house in the
Wolseley area of Winnipeg, where they tend their two cats, Bianca and Lady
Jane.
Pastor Michael Kurtz may be contacted at the church during office hours or at home by phoning (204) 775-0595 or by e-mail.
