About our Congregation

First Lutheran Church was established in 1878 to support the spiritual needs of the Icelandic community in Winnipeg. We value our Icelandic heritage, a heritage of caring and generosity, where traditions are both respected and renewed. Over the years, our church family has become more cosmopolitan and is home to families and individuals from many backgrounds. We welcome all newcomers to our family at First Lutheran.

The members of First Lutheran care very much about each other, but also about outreach at home and abroad, about the plight of Winnipeg’s homeless and hungry, and about ministries of sharing in our community.

Join us as we plan new ways in which we can share with our neighbours in the 21st century.

Meet our Pastor…

Michael Kurtz

Michael is a compassionate and understanding person who ministers to the spiritual needs of people of all ages, creates a feeling of excitement and anticipation, and relates Christian teachings to community issues that affect all of us in today’s world.

A Church for All Seasons

We hold worship services every Sunday throughout the year. Why?

Every Sunday: Each Sunday morning we celebrate the resurrection of Christ affirming the ultimate triumph of life and love in our lives

Advent: Our church year begins here, near the beginning of December. It is a time of waiting for the baby Jesus to be born, during which we affirm that light will shine in our lives even though at times we struggle in darkness.

Christmas: A time when we celebrate God’s embodiment in Jesus, affirming that God is with us even in the midst of a seemingly meaningless world.

Epiphany: During this season we celebrate God’s presence in all of creation, affirming the value of nature and of our lives at home, at work, and with friends.

Lent: As nature renews itself in spring, Lent is a time for renewal in mind and spirit by contemplating Christ who comes from God in love for us.

Holy Week: The week before Easter begins the celebration of Christ’s journey from death to life, affirming that darkness, confusion, and despair are not the last words in our lives.

Easter: The celebration of Christ’s resurrection affirms the happy endings that are woven into the fabric of God’s future, for all of us.

Pentecost: This festival commemorates the gift of the Holy Spirit, a spirit that is at work in the church and which is ours to carry into a world badly in need.

Summer: Our summer worship is a time when we are refreshed and restored for the months ahead by recalling scriptural stories from the past.

Autumn: As autumn is a time to return to the work of our daily lives, so we are reminded of the value of our work and our participation in God’s caring for the world.

November: At the end of the church year we recall the fear, uncertainty, and chaos of life while affirming that God’s promised presence offers a sure comfort and a certain hope for those in trouble or in need.
