A Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.)
is a practitioner concerned, as a member of the
healing arts, with the health needs of the public.
The chiropractor gives particular attention to the
relationship of the structural and neurological
aspects of the body in health and disease. He/she is
educated in the biological and clinical sciences as
well as in related health subjects.
The practice of chiropractic includes the
diagnosis and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal
disorders primarily by adjustment and/or manipulation
of the articulations of the spine and the
peripheral joints of the body and may include soft
tissue techniques and therapy, as well as the use of
electrotherapy, mechanotherapy, light, heat, cold,
exercise, supplemental supports, lifestyle and
nutritional counselling, and the use of diagnostic
imaging.
What is a chiropractic adjustment (spinal
manipulation)?
Spinal
manipulation (chiropractic adjustment) is at the heart of
chiropractic. The objective of spinal manipulation is
to reduce pain and restore function. An
adjustment can be delivered in a number of different
ways. Traditional adjustments (image left)
almost always produce a popping sound called an osseous
release as the joint is manipulated. This sound
is a byproduct of an improvement in joint mobility
which restores proper joint movement. Chiropractors
sometimes
use
an adjusting instrument such as an Activator®
(image right)
either exclusively or in combination with other
techniques to provide an adjustment. There is no
osseous release when an adjusting instrument is used.
When properly applied both techniques, traditional
and instrument-assisted, are usually painless and
extrememly safe
Manipulation
is performed around the world. In Europe it is more
commonly known as manual therapy.
Other techniques
In addition to
diversified and manually assisted adjusting
techniques, other modalities utilized in our office
include ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation,
massage, trigger point therapy, exercise therapy and
reconditioning.
