Today we almost universally tune keyboard instruments by a system called Equal Temperament so that all keys are equally intune--or out of tune, if you prefer! The leading tune system of the 18th and 19th centuries was the WellTempered scale, or unequal temperament, which favors some keys over others, offering keycoloring that supports the concept of "character of the keys".
