*Jacob Knelsen records date of death for Sarah Loewen, wife of Johann, as 30 Jun 1930.
*May 4 is inscribed on the headstone now located in Winkler Cemetery. Jacob Knelsen records date of death for Cornelius as May 4, but in another location appears to record May 2. Actual date of death is May 16, 1901 by civic records. Therefore the headstone has an incorrect Julian date of May 4, but should really have been May 2 by the Julian calendar. See notes regarding historical dates.

PHOTO -- Jacob and Helena Warkentin family. This photo was handed down through the family of Jacob and Anganetha Knelsen, Anganetha being the daughter of the Warkentins. The names of the children are from left, back row: Jacob, Helena, Johan and Peter; seated on Helena's lap is Anganetha; continuing from left are Katharina, Sara, Maria and Cornelius. The Warkentins immigrated into Canada in July of 1879, and so this photo was taken either just prior to leaving Russia or shortly after arriving in Manitoba. Two children died as infants prior to this photo: daughter Katharina (the next daughter was also named Katharina and is in this photo); and son Gerhard. Two other children were born after this photo: Anna, who died within two months of birth; and Isaac, the youngest, shown at inset. |
