Rev. Johann Warkentin served the Winkler M.B. Church as leader from 1906 to 1931, a period of 25 years. (When Rev. David Dyck moved to Borden, Sask. in 1906, Rev. Warkentin, who had been his assistant for 10 years, became his successor.)
He was born Sept. 29, 1859 in the village of Nieder Chortitz, Russia. On June 26, 1879 he arrived in Canada with his parents, Jacob and Helena (Dueck) Warkentin, who took a homestead near Kronsfeld (near the current Haskett village). He was married to Sara Loewen who predeceased him on June 27, 1930. After three years as widower, Rev. Warkentin married Mrs. Elizabeth Dyck (nee Hooge).
Rev. Warkentin joined the M.B. Church in 1890, and was ordained for the ministry on Oct. 13, 1895. For eight years he taught in a Mennonite village private school, then procured a farm to support his family. Rev. Warkentin died May 18, 1948 and was buried in the Winkler Cemetery.
Of his family of 10 children, eight were public school teachers in the province of Manitoba, with one rising to the position of school inspector. Three graduated from university and one served as teacher on the M.B. Foreign Mission Field in India. One daughter became the wife a minister, Rev. H.S. Voth.
