Thousands upon thousands of years ago, when our own world was just beginning to form, to bring life to this vast and empty part of the Universe, there was a place. A place of great wonder, of great magic, so unlike anything you've ever thought of before.
The planet Ariven, a wonderful, beautiful place, a complete and pure paradise, the utopia of utopias. Around this planet, a dozen moons circled, giving it the never-ending gleam of moonlight on every inch of its lands and waters.
Now, on each of the moons were temples, put there by magic, for the Goddesses to dwell when they chose to come from their heavenly plain to view the life on Ariven that they had watched since before it's beginning.
A select few humanoids from Ariven were able to come to the moons by magical means, to view these temples in all their majesty. This, in itself, was quite the feat. Alas, among those that made it survived, due to the fact that only those who passed the tests of the Goddesses were thought truly worthy to see the form of a Goddess. If one were to look on a Goddess without having passed the tests, he or she would surely perish.
From a dark corner of the known universe, perhaps from some where beyond what any life form, human or otherwise could comprehend came a great evil. Queen Dathala, along with her dark palace full of minions and servants, crashed in to the oceans of Ariven and began work to corrupt the people, to take them and add them to her evil kingdom, to gain more power. They started off fairly well, causing war on one of the continents, diplomatic disagreements on others. Slowly, but surely, the as of yet peaceful people of Ariven were taken over to the dark side.
The Goddesses didn't let this go on for too long, though. It wasn't very long before they took action. Though the Queen's power was mighty indeed, and she was able to put up quite the fight, her falling was inevitable. She was no Goddess, even if she was one once. The Goddesses of Ariven sealed her away under the oceans with their most powerful of magical ways.
Now, the Goddesses knew that nothing could be finite. They new, that some day, the evil Queen and her kingdom could escape from their watery prison, so they had to do everything they could to stop it.
Their first move was of course, to enroll guardians who would watch the place where Dathala had been captured. These guardians could never leave their post, for if they were to do so, they would die. Possibly instantly, possibly years from then, but it would indeed be very painful. Though this may seem harsh, they were to only serve one purpose, to guard the oceanic prison. As long as they staid as they should, they would truly be immortal.
Secondly, they knew they must have Guardians for their people, as their visits to the mortal realm were few and far between and they may not be there if the Queen were to become free.
These guardians could not be of pure godly blood, for any mortal that would view them would of course die on the spot. So, with some bickering from one or two of their ranks, the Goddesses chose 12 mortal men, all which had been chosen as worthy by the Goddesses, and had children with them. These children grew rapidly to teens, in just the span of weeks, and when their supernatural mothers left, each was left to look after his or her respective moon. The Goddesses called them their own personal miko, shrine maidens that would look after their temples.
Their reign was long and peaceful. They staid on their planets in solitude, with only the occasional contact with each other, and no contact with the mortals on the Ariven surface, who had for the most part forgot about their existence. Still they remained, to watch and protect.
It wasn't until one day, when shockingly, a mortal woman, who was quite old by mortal standards, appeared in the holy palace, the central meeting place of the Goddesses' children, did they ever think anything was amiss.
The palace's guardian, a lone miko, delivered the woman's news to the guardians of Ariven: She had a powerful, painful vision. It depicted in great detail the return of the evil queen and her people.
The guardians were well prepared. They immediately thought out a plan and carried it through.
Surely, the most logical thing to do would be to stay, to fight the queen when she showed up. But, in their isolation, they feared any kind of contact with the mortals.
So they used their one physical item of power, the Kaleidoscope Crystal, to take their powers away from them. Without these powers, they would be mere mortals and die, but it had to be done. They sent this power in to the future, to the future incarnations of themselves. In these incarnations, the god and the mortal would be separate; a transformation would be in order. This way, they could live among mortals while also protecting them.
They took their collective knowledge, placing it all in several dozen volumes of text, which they scattered about the universe. These books held all the knowledge of the universe until their present. For indeed, in the future, this knowledge would be needed by Ariven's new protectors.
Decades passed, and the original guardians died off, safe in the knowledge that their souls would join their powers in the future reincarnations.
It's been millennia, and the queen has awoken. She's broken free of her prison, and managed to kill most, if not all of the guards left under the oceans. She no longer wants Ariven; she wants the books, the volumes of the godly knowledge spread across the universe. These won't only lead her to the control of Ariven, but to the control of the known universe and beyond.
Before she can find them, however, she must first find and assemble the shards of the Kaleidoscope Crystal, which will act as a compass to guide her to those Knowledgeable books.
The miko are just beginning to awaken. They must stop Dathala from getting the Kaleidoscope Crystal, or at very least, the books, since that's her final mission.
Dathala is starting out early, starting to turn mortals of Ariven over to her side. Along with their first task, the miko must also protect Ariven's people.
It will be quite the challenge, quite the battle. The miko must handle it; they must, for good must prevail. It just has to, doesn't it?
