Shiels Family History

When we did our research, we came up with a different version of the early years. This version is based only on dates through records that we have found along with help from Ann Logan. Think about this version as well: Michael Shiels was born about 1670 and married Bessie Brown on Nov 24, 1716. Their son Dan married Jessie Scott on July 8, 1749 Their son James married Janet Younger on Dec 2, 1768 Their son Robert was born Jan 29, 1769 and married Annie Dickson on Jul 2, 1790 Their son Thomas was born Sept 27, 1795 and married Barbara Jean Cranstoun on April 5, 1817 We have been able to verify the above birth and marriage dates through church records. Although we enjoy Jack’s version, we believe there were some errors and missing generations in the old story. Further research is still ongoing.

Shiels Family History

This is the history of the Shiels family from 1670 to the early 1800's. Family tradition states that Micheal Shiels went from Kildare, Ireland to Scotland. He came for the harvest and he liked the country, the whiskey and the Scottish Lassies so well that he decided to stay. He came to an area near Biggar, Scotland which would later be known as East Mains. His first job was working for a man named Dan Scott and he received 10 pounds a year. Before the year was up, Micheal had fallen in love with Dan's niece Jessie Scott and they were married. Tradition says there was a big fight and Micheal and Jessie left. Micheal and Jessie had one son Dan (named after Jessie's uncle) and seven daughters; Bridget, Nora, Annie, Sarah, Margaret, Betty and Susan. Bridget started training as a Nun. She changed her mind and joined the Church of Scotland and went to China as a Missionary for her church. Nora was a teacher and a very successful governess. Annie married a farmer named Jim Dunn but they had no children. The remaining girls worked on the farm and never married.
