Marquetry and Inlaid Wood

Although I am neither a woodworker nor an artist, I did see a marvelous example of Marquetry at the Mount Rushmore - Black Hills park in South Dakota. There was a exquisite example of a scene of a barn which must have taken countless hours to fabricate. And it was for sale—but poverty being no disgrace—just a lousy inconvenience, we had to leave it hanging there! I truly hope whoever purchased it enjoys it as much as we did viewing it!

In fact, if and when I ever get finished with this web site, I hope to get started with this craft. I had found a wonderful site in Australia with kits for sale and tools. The Marquetry Craft Company. Unfortunately they seem to have closed. I have also found some books and magazine articles that show some unbelievable techniques. Of course, just looking at some fine old furniture gives some firsthand examples of what can be done with inlaid wood.

One of these is The Marquetry Manual by William A. Lincoln. I was able to purchase this at the newly opened Lee Valley Tools here in Winnipeg.

I found a very interesting article on Marquetry in American Woodworker, No. 68, October 1998. They showed an article on Mr. Frank Pollaro of East Orange, NJ and some samples of his superb craftsmanship including some photos of the desk at the late Jim Henson’s head office. What imagination!

Another magazine Fine Woodworking, No. 101, Aug. 1993 showed some interesting items in Marquetry.

Certainly Wood has an excellent site which gives a great deal of information on Veneers complete with descriptions.
