Grades N/K - Grade 4 (30 - 40 minutes)
Introduction of
Published Books Powerpoint Presentation
* During
school visits, I have found that children and teachers find the
story
behind
the story far more
fascinating than the story itself. So, using a multimedia projector,
powerpoint presentation and a laptop computer, I introduce myself by
briefly sharing some background information and including a few
illustrations from each of my
books that will
depict in a humorous way what each
story is about as well as the inspiration behind each
story. I also display some historical
items.
(10 min.)
* Illustrated 'Reading'
using Powerpoint of one or
more of my picture books and puppets for some
stories. (20 min.)

I use 'The Rabbit's Race' to show the research that I
needed to do in order to write about rabbits, their habitat and
behavior. I share all of this information prior to the reading. I
also use rabbit puppets to show the main difference in physiology
between a White-tailed jack rabbit and an Eastern Cottontail
rabbit.
* Focus on Teacher
Requests on one or more of the following
topics:(10
min.)
At these grade levels, I like to focus my presentations on
teacher requests to make a connection to what is currently being
taught.
-
Getting ideas and doing revisionsas those are aspects of
the writing process.
-
How to create settings, characters, story
situations, working with conflicts
finding great endings, rewriting and the magic of research.
-
How to become an author, write a cover letter, manuscript and find a
publisher.

Author
Bookings
It is always better to book at least 2 -
3 months in advance or ideally during the months of July and August when
Arts Council funding is available. Depending on the request,
if sufficient notice is given, I can apply for Arts Council funding to
cover my travel expenses. If you live in a small town or city where there
are other schools and public libraries, I would prefer a coordinated connection to these other venues with a
detailed schedule of my time. I look forward to working with you,
your students and community members.
