About the art
In the past, my focus has been tightly controlled, representational paintings in watercolour and coloured pencil. My recent mixed media works have grown out of a need to test the boundaries of my comfort zone by changing my style from a realistic approach to abstraction.
I have come to appreciate the processes rather than being totally focused on the outcome. It is exhilarating to test the limits of materials, processes and myself. My work is constantly changing. I am finding ways to add more layers and give a little more information while retaining some of the mystery.
Working intuitively, I develop complex layers using a variety of processes including monoprint, intaglio, collage, embossment, stamping, image-transfer, dying, tearing and drawing. Collections of paper fragments are important elements of my personal imagery. I respond to colour, shape and texture inventing as I go until it just feels right.
The contemplative nature of this work allows me to reflect on my life experiences, the places I have been and the people I have met. My works become a meaningful visual record of thoughts and feelings, trials and tribulations and a collection of personal wonders that delight, amuse, inspire and amaze me.
