YOUNG

The Youngs are Gramma Davidson's maternal line.

Gramma's mother, Joann Young Burrows, was born 21 Dec 1839 in Galston parish, Ayrshire, Scotland , the daughter of Robert Young and Grizel 'Gracie' Gillies.  She emigrated to Ontario with her parents in 1855.

She married James Burrows 18 March 1859 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Eversley nr King City, Ontario and lived in a house on his parents'  land where their first seven children were born.

In 1871/72 they moved to near Lake Gleason, North Keppel, Grey County, Ontario, where my gramma, Lucinda, was born.  They had 14 children in all.

In 1906 Joann and James came to visit their daughter Annie and Jim Vinnell  near Russell, Manitoba

and Joann became ill and died 12 May 1907 at Annie's home..

She is buried at Minniska Cemetery nr Russell.  James lived the next 9 years with my grandparents at their farm in Boulton Municipality and died 16 April 1916.  He is buried beside Joann, as is their son Will Young.  My brother, Jimmie Highfield, is buried there, too..

If not for her illness, Joann and James would have been buried at Big Bay Cemetery, North Keppel,  with her parents and many other family members.

Sisters: Annie Young Burrows, Ellen Young Brown and Margaret Young Cuddie.

I have no pictures of Isabella Young Brown, who lived at North Keppel,  or Grace Young Gunson, who lived near Arden, Manitoba.

Brother: Thomas Gillies Young, born 1858 in North Keppel, Grey County, Ontario.  His father died in 1873 and his mother in 1880 and he took over the farm.  He had a younger sister, Grace, and brother, Robert to support.

Thomas went to California, I think to earn money to help the farm, but died there 2 March 1889 at Santiago Canyon, Los Angeles County.  He is buried in El Modena Cemetery, El Modena, , California.

His brother, Robert, went to California and sold the family farm at Keppel while he was there.  Family information is that Robert then joined the U.S. Navy and nobody ever heard anything more about him.  Gramma knew his name, but nothing more.

BBrotBrother: William Young, born 16 Oct 1844 in Galston parish, Ayrshire, Scotland.  He emigrated with his parents in 1855.

He married Sarah Carley and had one daughter, Mary Martha 'Grace' Young.  After Sarah's death, he married Lavina 'Viney' (Carley)?

Thomas farmed in the North Keppel area and later had a sawmill at Wiarton in which he employed many of his family..

He died 27 Sept 1908 in Aurora, Ontario, and is buried with Sarah at King City, York County, Ontario, along with his daughter M.M. Grace, who died unmarried 18 Oct 1909, age 29 years.

(it is possible that this picture is not of William)

Wedding  photo of Helen 'Ellen' Young and Andrew Brown, married 17 May 1876 at the Lake Charles, North Keppel home of her parents.

Ellen was born 21 August 1855 at North Keppel, Grey County, Ontario, 2 weeks after the family arrived from Scotland.

Ellen and Andrew Brown had 12 children, but lost 3 little ones within one month in 1887 of diphtheria.  They  also raised the 3 children of her sister, Isabella and James Brown, after Isabella died in 1881, age 31.

Ellen died 5 April 1941 in Wiarton, Ontario and she and Andrew are buried in Wiarton Cemetery.

Margaret Young and William Cuddie family.

Margaret was born 22 Oct 1842 in Galston parish, Ayrshire, Scotland and emigrated with her parents in 1855.  She married William, a widower with several children, about 1871 and had a family of 4 children.  They farmed at North Keppel, Grey County, Ontario.

After her husband's death in 1894, Margaret moved with her children to Wiarton, Ontario.

Margaret died 9 Dec 1907 and she and William are buried at Big Bay Cemetery, North Keppel, with many family members.
