When Melita Clemence's husband, Murray, was killed
in a farming accident in 1977, the future looked bleak. He
left Melita with six children and the family farm to support.
But Melita, owner of Bonnington Farm, had a dream of raising
horses.
So, in 1977, Melita bought a black-and-white Paint
stallion named L&M's High Socks and two Paint broodmares, Docs
Painted Sand and Thymes Lady and went into the breeding business.
To date, Melita, who is now 70 years young, has
raised more than 380 registered Paint foals on her farm. Most
importantly, she was able to keep the 480 acre farm and care for her
children, all of whom attended university or technical
school. Paint Horses helped Melita pull her family
through the hard times.
"Mom and her horses are well known in this area
of Canada" said Cathy Clemence, daughter and veterinarian in
Russell, Manitoba. "The horses she produces are known for their
great dispositions, excellent conformation and good straight
legs. Many a cowboy feels proud to ride a horse from
Bonnington Farm."
Melita has exported horses to Germany and
Italy. "Even though I like black-and-white Paints, more
important than color to me is good disposition and
conformation," she noted "It's important to be
selective."
Today, she has approximately 250 Paint and Quarter
Horses, ponies and donkeys. She still cares for them and
halter-breaks many.
One of the reasons for the success of Bonnington
Farm has been Melita's dedication, determination, care plus high
standards.
"My life has been an enjoyable trip," she
comments "and I don't plan on quitting. I'll always look
ahead."
