Central United
was established in 1969 with the amalgamation of St. Paul=s United (1880-1969), Kemnay United (1891-1969),
and First Church United (1881-1969).
The Gospel has been proclaimed at the present location since 1882.

Disaster struck
in June 1986 when the church was struck by lightning and burnt to the
ground. The congregation wasted little
time in planning the re-building and raising the necessary funds to permit them
to do so.

In September
1988, the new building was opened and in 1989 the financial obligation of the
construction was fulfilled.

Situated in the
downtown area of the city, we have developed an open door policy which attempts
to meet the spiritual needs of all. Our
goal is to make everyone feel welcome.
Our motto is AA
church with a heart in the heart of the city@.

Central United
has a multiple staff ministry currently including one full-time Ordained
Minister, a full-time Office Administrator, a full-time caretaker, as well as a
Sunday School Superintendent, choir director and organist. We are currently conducting a search for a
second Ordained or Diaconal Minister to fill the position left vacant by the
move of one of our Ministers.

At Central
United, people have no difficulty in accepting the use of contemporary language
as it is applied to scripture in modern translations, but have a preference for
traditional theological language.
$
Our Christian
Education Committee, Superintendent and Sunday School teachers are expected to
provide Christian Education relating to the Bible, the church and Christian
Tradition. Using Bible Quest and other
chosen curriculum, our Sunday School is an active and integral part of the church
life.

Our
congregation believes in sharing with those in need and reaching out to them
according to our resources. There is a
great deal of talent in our congregation, which is generously shared within the
ministries of the church and the community.
$
The wide
diversity in demographics of our congregation provides ample opportunity for
challenge and growth.
$
Over the past
few years we have averaged 17 baptisms, 20 weddings, and 58 funerals per year.
