Rawhide
Rawhide
is made by scraping the inside of large whole hides, removing the hair,
cleaning thoroughly, frame stretching to dry, and then sanding both
sides smooth. I do not bleach the skins, so they retain their natural
colour when dried. Chosen hides are large with few or no holes, knife
scores, stains, or blemishes.
Hides are available whole or in pre-cut drum circles. When
cutting the drum heads, I take care to choose portions of uniform
thickness and integrity.

Rawhide Cordage - Babiche
Pre-cut rawhide cordage or
babiche is available for drum frame lacing, snowshoes, etc. Rawhide
cordage is a very useful fastener, when laced up wet it cinches
extremely tight as it dries to secure and hold fast. It is extremely
strong, lasts almost forever, and can be reused over and over again.
Different sizes of cord are available, from thin caribou string up to
heavy bison cords.
