Drums
In addition to leather and rawhide, I am
pleased to offer
quality hand made drum
frames.
I
have been building hand drum frames to order for several years to
accommodate the demand from rawhide customers. After experimenting with
different kinds of wood and construction methods, I have worked to
develop one piece hardwood round drum frames that are strong, and look
and sound great.
I have worked
with many
groups and organizations together with several 1st Nations elders and
cultural teachers hosting drum making workshops, sharing my
experience
with animal hides and helping to bring the drum to new hands.
We have three
sizes of hand drum frames available: 12", 14", and 17"
diameter, by 2 ½” wide. These drum hoops are each cut
individually from selected white ash hardwood. Each drum frame is made
by hand, formed from one piece of solid wood, steam-bent to shape and
sanded smooth. These beautiful drum frames are solid, strong,
lightweight, and resonant. All edges are beveled and sanded smooth to
prevent wear along the rawhide edges of the finished drum.
All drum frames have a
natural, untreated finish. Bees’ wax can be applied to each frame
on request to aid in drum building. A light coat of wax keeps the
rawhide from adhering to the raw wood as it dries and allows the hide
to move over the frame smoothly as it contracts and expands over time.

Dogsleds

custom order, I am
building versatile and lightweight recreational dogsleds. These sleds
are individually hand made from the finest select white ash and maple
hardwoods, and fastened with elk, moose, or bison rawhide. The wood is
bound and laced with wet rawhide which, as it dries, tightens with very
great strength to secure all joints and provides the structural
integrity for the sled body. This gives the sled as a whole flexible
strength and light weight resulting in great handling and performance,
while remaining extremely durable and sturdy. Runners beneath the skis
are flat steel or high density polyethylene.
