Aviation
Flying is Fun! I am an aviation enthusiast since childhood, earning Flight Sergeant after a one year stint between hockey with Canadian Air Cadets Squadron 317. The Air Cadet program is superb and I recommend it for any young aspiring military or civil pilot hopeful. Some fellow cadets are now flying commercial jets including 737's and the Airbus-320 from their original Air Cadet flight training. I continually learn and share the experience of flight. I am very fortunate to fly the Beech 95 twin and to spend time on the CF-114 Tutor jet trainer at Moose Jaw Military. Friends have taught me how to fly across much of Canada and the Northwest Territories and the United States including the Sierra Nevadas and the Rocky Mountains. The following pages also share my experience flying to the Caribbean including the Bahamas, the Bermuda Triangle, the Exumas, the Turks and Caicos across Dominica Republic and Haiti and Puerto Rico with Cecil and Kaye Sorensen and grandson Thad ("Pal") in a Cardinal. I hope they can help you in your flight planning! Promoting aviation as a volunteer in the Civil Air Search and Rescue (CASARA) Zone 2 is a large part of my life. As Vice-President/Deputy Director, Chief Pilot and a former Zone Commander I have organized and flown numerous missions with the Department of National Defence and the RCMP in finding the lost or in danger. CASARA volunteers join as a Spotter, Navigator, and/or Pilot with specialized training in our private fleet and the C-130 Hercules. In addition to ground and aerial training, volunteers are offered First Aid training at various levels. In addition to our scheduled Search and Rescue Exercises (SAREXs) we participate jointly with other Zones in Manitoba as well as other Western Provincial Zones. The collegiality is superb with experienced and trained volunteers who work at all hours to serve. Their dedication and commitment is a strong motivation to participate in a solemnly good cause. I've had tremendous experiences in training at the Department of National Defence, Trenton, Ontario with 8 Wing in 2003 and have completed the highest and final course in search and rescue with the Canadian Air Force at CFB Halifax (Stadacona) and the Coast Guard College in Sydney in 2009. As a member of the Volunteer Search and Rescue Association (VSARA) in Search and Rescue Civilian Operations (SARCOP) of the RCMP, I am certified in using the Bell Long-Ranger IV's Forward Looking Infra-red (FLIR) detection equipment and Nite-Sun spotlight. In 2006 and 2004, I have the great honour of serving as Brandon Flying Club's President. I've worked with some tremendous individuals in the Club Executive and hope to continue it's legacy. The Club offers many services including fuel, maintenance and training. It is at CYBR. Happy flying! and thank-you fellow aviators!
