Medicine Wheel
Perspective
It is our intent to educate through
traditional games and activities an understanding and daily incorporation of of the Medicine Wheel. Each
game or activity is not exclusively founded in one direction, but has a stronger
affiliation to the social, physical, intra-personal or knowledge base of the
Wheel of Life. The lessons learned in playing are as meaningful and sacred as our language,
story telling, teachings, songs and medicines.
Using the Medicine Wheel context of learning, games and activities are encorporated with each direction:
Eastern Direction: Social games
towards Belonging, a macro perspective, and communication. Games: Baggatawa or
Double Ball.
Southern Direction: Physical game towards Mastery,
micro perspective. Games: Dog Soldier and Foxtails.
Western
Direction: Games of Observation: Independance and intuitive. Games: Hand
Games, Blanket/Moccassin/Basket and Stone.
Northern Direction:
Games of Knowledge/Strategies towards developing Generosity, problem solving and
a balanced worldview. Games: Spiders Web and Story Telling.
The largest
number and variation of games and activities in the world come from Turtle
Island (North America). Games and activities are designed to increase skills and
abilities in specific areas of the Wheel of Life. Playing shapes our experiences
in developing a balanced and wholistic approach in life.
Each of us as a part
of the Wheel are unique and at a place deserving of honour and support. Playing
can build a sense of worth, value, honour and giving.
