Creating Lifelong Learners
Studies indicate that today's student will have to retrain for a different career five or more times in his/her life. To be able to do this successfully, today's student must become a lifelong learner. Tools necessary for the lifelong learner are: ►a solid foundation in the language arts ►a firm grounding in basic mathematical skills ►a positive attitude toward learning ►a vision of him/herself as a successful learner ►support from the adults in his/her life
Today's teachers are under increasing pressure -- more class work to cover in less time; larger classes; less preparation time. Reacting to public demand to get "back to the basics" and to demonstrate that today's student is really learning, Manitoba Education and Training is developing new curricula with increased emphasis on measurable skills, and has mandated province-wide testing in certain subjects at certain grade levels. The results of these tests will directly influence the student's progress from one grade to the next. Today's parents are under increasing pressure, too -- long working hours; commuting to and from work; driving the youngsters to and from extracurricular activities; running a household -- and are often unsure of how best to help their child. Now, more than ever before, it is imperative that concerned parents get help for their child as soon as there is any indication that the student is having difficulty with school work. The sooner the student gets qualified help, the sooner he/she will be back on the track to success!
