| This is the skirt material that I purchased. 8 yards of 18 oz vinyl coated
nylon. As it turned out I thought that I would have allot left over, but I really didn't.
I believe the amount quoted on the plans is incorrect. |
 |
| First thing to do is draw a diagram of your craft and plot the dimensions
of the skirt attach strips. Also note the distance between the attach strips mine were the
same distance. This is important when you attach the skirt so that it hangs correctly(The
same amount of skirt to inflate all around the craft). |
 |
| I rolled out the skirt material. The material has two different sides to
it. One side is smooth and shiny, this has more vinyl material on it and should be facing
the outside of the craft. |
 |
| The plans have a template on it that I transposed to sheet of paper. The
rear shape is cut. the front shape is dotted. |
 |
| The craft needs to be marked at the 3/6/9 foot marks from the stern, this
is done with a T square to make sure the lines are perpendicular to the outer shape of the
outer attach strip. In this picture you will see the 6 foot line |
 |
| This is the piece that was cut for the rear skirt. The dimensions of what
you see here are 33 3/4 X 81 1/2. The piece is wider than the side pieces by 3 inches,
this is according to the plans and is why I did not have allot of material left over. You
can not just cut the 61.5 inch skirt material in half like you can with the sides. As
you can see I have used the template and some chalk to mark the ends, I have also
indicated the distances for the top and bottom. These are 1 inch greater than that marked
on the drawing above for gluing. The construction video from UH shows that for the back
strip you may have to turn your template so that your tack strip measurements are true. I
believe that I had to move the bottom in about a 1/2 inch on either side to get my
measurement correct. I have marked the smooth side, which is not really important to do
for the rear strip.
|
 |
| This is the markings for the left side rear, I have marked the 61.5 inch
material in half, but I used pencil so you do not see it in this picture. But you can see
that the template just ends mid way. |
 |
| This has both rear sides marked, they are mirror images so that the smooth
side is on the outside of the craft. |
 |
| This is the markings for the front. The outer attach strip measurement is
173 1/4 as it should be. The inner measurement is 148 which is 8 inches longer. UH makes
it very clear in the video not to turn the templates to improve this measurement. I am
suppose to just gather this extra up when I do the attachment. |
 |
| Here they are all cut out and ready for glue. The glue is hh-66.
|
 |
| I used a rounded chair top to help me get the seams done. Be careful to
have it line up all along the seem. I did a good job on the rear seams, but I must have
bumped my head or sniffed to much HH-66 for the front. I was out more than an inch on the
outer attach strip portion of the front seem. I should be able to fix that when I put it
on the craft, but it would have been nice to have them done perfect. |
 |
| Here I have just hung the skirt around the craft for a rough fit, looks
good. |
 |
| Time to attach the skirt, used # 8 screws. |
 |
| Here I have folded over the edge 1/2 inch, lined up the 3 foot lines
marked on the craft and on the skirt, drilled a pilot hole and put in a screw. This was
done on both the outer and inner attach strips on both sides of the craft. |
 |
| The screws will be placed 4 inch apart, except were more are required. |
 |
| one side complete |
 |
| Rear view |
 |
| close-up. Notice the seam center lining up with the corner of the craft. I
will now need to do the inner attach strip, which will be difficult because I will be
working over my head and the skirt will want to fall into my work. I will try to take a
couple of pictures of that. |
