My name is Janet Cape and I have been a musician in the Canadian Forces (Reserves) since 1996. I began my military career in the army as a member of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, and then the 5th (BC) Field Regiment in Victoria, BC. I then transferred to the navy, serving first with HMCS Mallahat in Victoria, and now with HMCS Chippawa in Winnipeg, MB. I have also had the opportunity to travel across Canada several times with the National Band of the Naval Reserve. Being able to explore our country and make music with friends from coast to coast is something that I value highly. In our interviews, many of the women of the CWAC Pipe Band mentioned how highly they value similar experiences.
The women of the CWAC Pipe Band and Brass Band broke new ground. At a time when a woman's place was still considered by many to be in the home, joining the army and travelling across Canada and abroad was a tremendous accomplishment. Their participation in the CWAC paved the way for countless women, including myself, to serve our country as military musicians. I hope that this website will help more people to learn about these important women.
