MERLIN'S MAGIC
Angel Helpers

(Inner Worlds Music)

review copyright (c) 1998 by Syd Baumel

If Asha's angels are a cosy chamber group, the flock conjured up by the German ensemble known as Merlin's Magic is practically an orchestra. Not only do the seven musicians paint with a symphonically grand palette, you won't find any slack New Age meanderings here either. Merlin's Magic's odes to Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and four other leading angelic lights are dynamically thematic, forthrightly melodic, and take-no-prisoners sentimental (yes, there is light -- and sweetness, oi!). Especially affecting are Tanja Diebold's celestially sopranic evocations of faith, hope, and love in "Heavenly Spheres," "Benediction," and "Chamuel, the Power of Worship." In the latter -- a piece depicting the uplifting effect of worship or contemplation in sacred places -- Diebold silkenly coos an ooh-ahh melody reminiscent of Elvis's anthem "Can't Help Falling in Love" in the spare, luminous style of Schubert's "Ave Maria." Ooohhh...ahhhh.... I'm all ferklempt... (really)
