FAQ's What to bring?
Soft dance slippers/bare feet (floors may be cold so soft
slippers are best) Hip Scarf, Water Bottle, Comfortable Clothing
Notebook and Pen. Try not to eat at least 1-½ hours before
starting.
What kind of Workout?
Physically the dance form can be quite demanding. One of
its chief features is isolation of the body parts. The dancers
must learn to separate their rib cages from the rest of
their abdomens thus using muscles they may never have before.
Aerobic - for cardio vascular and Calonetic - stretches all
the muscles gently.
Will I have a sore stomach? No - but possibly abdominal's
as you generally do not use them, hips, rib cage, diaphragm,
and arms.
Spirituality?
The dances origin is in sacred ritual. It is a holistic
philosophy of body/mind awareness. In primitive cultures,
abdominal dances were part of the fertility rites that encouraged
and gave thanks for procreation. In a matriarchal society,
which centered on a nurturing Earth Mother goddess, these
dances are said to have been very empowering to women. But
the spiritual and ritualistic focus of the dance form, does
not advocate a return to paganism. It simply helps students
to develop a positive dance persona. Hence, one does not
teach solely dance steps. The dance extends a feeling of
personal consciousness. Students, see in their minds-eye,
patterns of shape and direction in the creation of dance.
They visualize their own natural connection to the earth
and to their creative process.
Ages:
Part of the fascination of Belly Dance is that it speaks
to all women regardless of their ages and body types. A
BD's career is not over at the age of 30 as it is often
with other dance forms. 14-83!!!!! The BD is something you
can't achieve without having an under degree of feeling,
both emotionally and physically. Nevertheless the art of
BD can be a positive experience. Women come away feeling
more positive about their bodies and souls. They have raised
their energy levels, gotten in touch with their feminine
sides, and they are just happy about being a woman.
