PCDF Projects:

PCDF has and will be working on a wide range of projects in the Crop areas that will provide information for the enhancement of new or different value added opportunities.

1)       Cereals –

a)       Evaluation of high yielding wheat that might be suitable for the ethanol industry.

b)       Hard Red wheat varieties Coop trials that will identify new and existing wheat varieties suitable to the Parkland area of Manitoba.

c)       Hulless and Forage barley varieties for silage and green feed potential.

d)       Winter wheat variety evaluation as an alternative crop for supplying the growing ethanol industry.

e)       Canary seed has a spot market that is worth pursuing some years.

2)       Forages

a)       Annual Forages evaluation for enhanced livestock production

b)       Forage variety trials for evaluation under effluent Irrigation management.

3)       Industrial Hemp

a)       PCDF is the provincial lead for hemp grain and fibre evaluation and agronomy investigations for Industrial Hemp.

4)       Pulse Crops

a)       Evaluation of pea varieties for grain and silage are hosted.

b)       Lentils are a pulse crop that have potential and are being evaluated and demonstrated

c)       Edible beans, Soybeans, and Fababeans are evaluated.

5)       Oilseeds

a)       Flax does well in the region and has market potential through local edible food processors.

b)       Canola varieties need to be evaluated for the potential bio diesel industry that is being established.

6)       Special Crops

a)       Special crops are considered to be generally new or limited acreage crops that might have a potential in the region. PCDF will introduce the crop and grow it in trials to document some local production data. This will give producers a heads up to some of the potential management or production flags.

b)       Some special crops that have been recently evaluated include: Borage, Camelina, Sweet Corn

7)       Management Practices

a)       PCDF will work with companies that may have a specialized problem that requires research. For example a project has been recently completed where wood ash was investigated for it’s use as a soil amendment on low pH soils. After a three year study, the ash has now received environmental approval for spreading in fields. This is a win for the environment, the company and the farmers

8)       Annual Report
